Two Democratic congressmen from Virginia, requested the removal of a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee from the Capitol in Washington, and its replacement by another one representing an African American.
Rep. A. Donald McEachin (D-Va.) and Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.) sent a letter to Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam to that effect, seeking to include a reference to slavery in the state’s history, the Washington Post reported.
The governor appears to agree with the proposal and the request likely will be approved in January, as the Democrats will be a majority in the Virginia Legislature, according to The Western Journal.
The statue of Lee was installed in 1909 and is one of 13 representing the original colonies in the Crypt, the circular room located on the first floor of the Capitol below the Rotunda, where George Washington’s statue also is located.
Robert E. Lee graduated with honors from the West Point Military Academy and distinguished himself in various battles during the Mexican War.
He then led Confederate forces operating in the south during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.
Although he owned slaves, in 1856 he wrote his wife that slavery was “a diabolical thing on the moral and political plane,” according to The Associated Press.
Later, he was promoted and monuments were erected in his memory.
Starting in 2015 some of his statues were being removed at the behest of those who questioned his actions and on racial grounds, against the Republicans.
Sen. William M. Stanley Jr. (R-Va.), regretted the proposal of the Democratic congressmen calling it “incredible but predictable.”
“And while they are at it, they should take down the marble statue of George Washington,” he added, not without a certain irony.
What’s next? Are McEachin and Wexton going to ask Ralph to tear down the old Capitol building because it was designed by Thomas Jefferson?” Stanley Jr. added, according to The Western Journal.
