A House Democrats’ expert witness during President Donald Trump’s impeachment hearings said Saturday, Sept. 26 that Judge Amy Coney Barrett, “deserves” a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

In an op-ed for Bloomberg, Harvard Law professor Noah Feldman said that though he did not approve of the Republicans’ plan to move forward with a nomination and confirmation, he found that Barrett “is highly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court,” reported Daily Caller.

Feldman said Barrett, who helped him when he was presented with complex cases, “had the ability to bring logic and order to disorder and complexity.” He noted that he disagreed with Barrett on a number of issues but acknowledged that she “meets and exceeds” basic criteria for being a good justice.

“I disagree with much of her judicial philosophy and expect to disagree with many, maybe even most of her future votes and opinions. Yet despite this disagreement, I know her to be a brilliant and conscientious lawyer who will analyze and decide cases in good faith, applying the jurisprudential principles to which she is committed,” he wrote.

Feldman’s remarks came hours before President Trump nominated Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18.

“Today it is my honor to nominate one of our nation’s most brilliant and gifted legal minds to the Supreme Court,” President Trump said in the Rose Garden alongside Barrett. “She is a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials, and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution—Judge Amy Coney Barrett.”

Shortly after the president’s announcement, Democrats and their allies in the media launched attacks against Barrett for her Catholic faith and smeared her “an extreme jurist,” the Daily Wire reported.

“Trump’s handpicked successor to Justice Ginsburg’s seat makes it clear: they intend to destroy the Affordable Care Act & overturn Roe. This selection would move the court further right for a generation & harm millions of Americans. I strongly oppose Judge Barrett’s nomination,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), the Democratic vice presidential nominee, tweeted.

“A vote for Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a vote to eliminate health care for millions in the middle of pandemic,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote. “Democrats are fighting for Americans’ health care.”

Sen. Kisten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) claimed that Barrett’s nomination was a “product of a corrupt, illegitimate process that undermines the will of the American people,” adding, “Alongside her dangerous, ultra-conservative record, she’s not fit to serve on the Supreme Court.”

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) revealed Saturday evening that the upcoming Senate Judiciary hearings for Barrett begin on Monday, Oct. 12, warning that Barrett will face challenges in the committee. He also cautioned Democrats against treating her “like they did Justice Kavanaugh.”

“It’s going to blow up in their faces big time,” Graham told Fox News’s Jeannine Pirro. “If they continue this pattern of trying to demean this outstanding nominee, I think the American people will push back and push back hard.”
