As America wakes up to a new breed of recklessly aggressive politicians wielding the weapons of wild accusation and emotional acrimony, the differences between the elder statesman and the new in-your-face-style are presented to the entire country and begs the question—what do the voters want? Are we beyond the days when the inexperienced young naturally proceeded with caution to gain experience and were held accountable for their zealotry when they didn’t? Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts sets the tone, followed by the president’s view and then the intentions of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
Rep. Pressley said, “I will always refer to him as the occupant as he is only occupying space. He does not embody the grace, the empathy, the compassion, the integrity that that office requires and that the American people deserve.”
President Donald Trump said, “These are people that hate our country. Hey John, they hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion. Now it’s possible I’m wrong the voters will decide. But when I hear the way they talk about our country, when I hear the anti-Semitic language they use, when I hear the hatred that they have for Israel and the love they have for enemies like Al-Qaeda, then you know what? I will tell you, I do not believe this is good for the Democrat Party. Certainly it’s not the party that I’ve known over the years.”
Omar said, “This is the agenda of white nationalists whether it is happening in chat rooms or it’s happening on national TV. And now it’s reached the White House garden. I have not made impeachment central to my election or my tenure. But since the day that I’d gotten elected, I had said to people it is not if he will be impeached, but when. So it is time for us to stop allowing this president to make a mockery out of our Constitution. It’s time for us to impeach this president.”
Instead of learning any lesson of decency and decorum necessary in the compromise required to perform the people’s legislative work after a scolding from the president, this group of freshman congresswomen take the bait, refresh their indignation, and rush in where angels fear to tread.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said, “And so we’ll stay focused on our agenda. And we won’t get caught slipping because all of this is a distraction. It’s a distraction from what’s most important and from our core values as American citizens.” Rep. Tlaib (D-Mich.) said, “And despite this and other many attempts to distract us, I remain focused we remain focused on holding him accountable to the laws of this land and accountable to the American people.”
Referring to a recent FoxNews interview where Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called these congresswomen communists, the president said, “I’m saying that they’re socialists definitely. As to whether or not they’re communists, I would think they might be, but this isn’t what our country is about. Nevertheless, they’re free to leave if they want. And if they want to leave, that’s fine. And if they want to stay, that’s fine. But the people have to know. And politicians can’t be afraid to take them on.”
The Trump President said, “Well they’re very unhappy, I’m watching them, all they do is complain. So all I’m saying is if they want to leave they can leave John. They can leave. I mean I look at the one, I look at Omar I don’t know I never met her. I hear the way she talks about al-Qaida. Al-Qaida has killed many Americans. She said you can hold your chest out. You can, when I think of America, huh, when I think of al-Qaeda, I can hold my chest out. When she talked about the World Trade Center being knocked down, some people, you remember the famous quote: ‘some people’. These are people that in my opinion hate our country. Now you can say what you want but get a list of all of the statements they’ve made. And all I’m saying that if they’re not happy here, they can leave. They can leave and you know what? I’m I’m sure that there’ll be many people that won’t miss them. But they have to love, they have to love our country. They’re Congress people. “
