A northern Californian social media aggregator stopped Americans from showing their support for the president because doing so would encourage violence and offend other users.
Reddit Inc. has shut down The_Donald online community for allegedly promoting hate based on identity, interfering with users, and antagonizing others.
“All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith [and] we banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity,” the company in a statement. “The community has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average (rule one), antagonized us and other communities (rules two and eight), and its mod[erator]s have refused to meet our most basic expectations.”
When The BL tried to access the forum to verify the accuracy of this statement, none of the posts appeared, there was an image of a red gavel, and brief explanation the community was banned for breaking the rules.
“r/The_Donald has been banned from Reddit,” the webpage said. “This community was banned for violating rule one, two, and eight.”
The San Francisco internet company confirmed it will resort to deleting thousands of related posts from its platform.
“Alongside the change to the content policy, we are initially banning about 2,000 subreddits, the vast majority of which are inactive,” the company said. “Of these communities, about 200 have more than 10 daily users. Both r/The_Donald and r/ChapoTrapHouse were included.”
Reddit defended its decision to censor certain communities even though the company actively encourages like-minded people to sign up and find groups they are interested in.
“Until now, we have worked in good faith to help them preserve the community as a space for its users—through warnings, mod changes, quarantining, and more,” the company said. “Debate and creativity are welcome but spam and malicious attempts to interfere with other communities are not.”
The 2020 Trump campaign team has encouraged disenchanted Reddit users to use their cellphone to download President Donald Trump’s official election app.
“To hear directly from the president, people should download the Trump app and text ‘Trump’ to 88022,” Campaign Communications Director Tim Murtaugh said on Twitter.
The campaign team confirmed the app not only provides updates but also volunteering opportunities to show support for the president’s campaign, and even go in the draw to win prizes.
“Our new groundbreaking Team Trump app allows you to get involved, volunteer, and earn points toward exclusive prizes,” Team Trump said on Twitter. “Download ‘Trump 2020’ now on Apple and Android.”
