Former NYPD officer and Secret Service agent Dan Bongino explained on “Fox & Friends” Monday, Feb. 17, why more than 1,100 former Justice Department officials erupted and called for Attorney General Bill Barr to step down following his decision to revisit the sentencing of Roger Stone.
More than 1,100 former Justice Department employees have signed an online petition urging Barr to resign and praising the four prosecutors who withdrew from the Stone case on Feb. 11, after what they perceived as political interference. The signatures for the petition were gathered by Protect Democracy which is an anti-Trump group formed by former Obama administration officials, according to the Breitbart News.
“Mr. Barr’s actions in doing the president’s personal bidding unfortunately speak louder than his words. Those actions, and the damage they have done to the Department of Justice’s reputation for integrity and the rule of law, require Mr. Barr to resign. But because we have little expectation he will do so, it falls to the Department’s career officials to take appropriate action to uphold their oaths of office and defend nonpartisan, apolitical justice,” the officials wrote in a letter.
When asked what his reaction to the letter, Bongino said “Bill Barr is probably laughing at these idiots right now,” noting that “they’re former DOJ people for a reason.”
“If you look back under the Obama administration and their hiring practice … what they did was, although you’re legally not allowed to ask party affiliation when you hire people for those jobs, it was clear based on the resumes of the people Obama’ administration overwhelmingly hired in the DOJs—attorneys and otherwise—that they were hardcore leftists, all of them,” he said.
The letter virtually focuses on Barr’s decision to overrule the original prosecutors who had handled Stone’s case and reduce his recommended sentence. The DOJ leader’s intervention led to the prosecutors withdrawing from their posts en mass. Barr has been under fire for the reversal.
“Nine years for someone with no criminal history. You want this guy to die in prison?” Bongino asked. “Let’s just be candid. The left is all in on the police state right now and government spying. They just are. There is no other way to describe it.”
Bongino went on to argue that the premise of the former DOJ’s letter is flawed.
“There’s nothing illegal happening right now,” he said. “Bill Barr made an independent decision about a grotesque violation of sentencing guidelines here, and he made a decision as the steward of the elected president of the United States.”
Mollie Hemingway, a Fox News contributor, suggested that the media and other Resistance members vehemently oppose Barr because of the fear of John Durham’s investigation—the federal prosecutor Barr appointed to investigate the FBI’s spying on the Trump campaign.
Barr, who seems unshakable under relentless attacks, has tapped several other federal prosecutors to review DOJ cases. Last week, he confirmed that the Justice Department was reviewing information about Ukraine coming to the agency from President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and others, reported Fox News.
