President Joe Biden slammed the conservative protest at the U.S. Capitol as an “assault on free and fair elections,” claiming the insurrectionists at the Jan. 6 event are worse than slave-owning Confederates in the Civil War.
“The assault on free and fair elections is just such a threat—literally. I’ve said it before. We’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole—since the Civil War,” Biden said in a speech in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, July 13.
“Confederates, back then, never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on January 6. I’m not saying this to alarm you. I’m saying this because you should be alarmed,” he said, according to a video tweet shared by NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck.
But his remarks were apparently hyperbolic.
According to Breitbart, the Civil War was the bloodiest war in the United States with an estimated 750,000 deaths, in which the Confederate soldiers did not breach the Capitol.
Meanwhile, the January 6 riot saw only one death as a direct result of violence at the Capitol. Ashli Babbitt, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as she climbed through a broken door into the Speaker’s Lobby. Three others who died had medical emergencies, and Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick suffered two strokes at the base of his brainstem due to a blood clot in an artery the day after the riot.
The president then turned his attack at former President Donald Trump and those who challenged the 2020 election results.
“The big lie is just that: a big lie,” Biden said. “You don’t call facts ‘fake’ and then try to bring down the American experiment just because you’re unhappy. That’s not statesmanship, that’s selfishness. That’s not democracy, that’s the denial of the right to vote. It suppresses. It subjugates.”
Biden traveled to Pennsylvania to delivery remarks on “actions to protect the sacred, constitutional right to vote.”
In his remarks, Biden said that, “I swore an oath to you and to God to preserve protect and defend the Constitution. That’s an oath that forms a sacred trust to defend America against all threats both foreign and domestic.”
The Jan. 6 protest started as a mostly peaceful event. A relatively small group of Trump supporters concerned about ballot integrity, election security, and government transparency showed up to demonstrate in Washington. The protest turned into a riot, then the Democrats have tried to blame Trump, but his allies blamed the role on outside agitators, not his supporters.
Since January 6, the left and its media have put too much focus on the event. During a podcast on Monday, journalist Megyn Kelly said the media portrayed the Capitol riot “so much worse than it actually was.”
