Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is racking up endorsements but rejected one from former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, Mar. 3, asking, “How can I return it?”

Comey, who was the FBI director under the Obama-Biden administration, left the Republican Party in 2018. On Tuesday, Comey said he endorsed the former vice president and voted for him in Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary on Super Tuesday.

“Voted in first Dem primary to support party dedicated to restoring values in WH. I agree with @amyklobuchar: We need candidate who cares about all Americans and will restore decency, dignity to the office,” Comey wrote on Twitter. “There is a reason Trump fears @joebiden and roots for Bernie. #Biden2020.”

But Andrew Bates, a communications staffer for Biden and an alum of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, asked to return Comey’s endorsement: “Yes, customer service? I just received a package that I very much did not order. How can I return it, free of charge?”

Comey and his wife previously donated $2,700 to Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s (D-Minn.) campaign. Klobuchar joined former South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg suspendingher presidential campaign and endorsed Biden, prompting President Trump to suggest that the Democratic primary is “rigged” against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and other candidates have dropped out of the race in exchange for administration positions.

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas), who has said the government should forcibly confiscate assault rifles from Americans, also endorsed Biden on Monday. Biden accepted the endorsement and vowed to put O’Rourke in charge of gun-control efforts.

“I want to make something clear. I’m gonna guarantee you, this is not the last you’re seeing of this guy, you’re gonna take care of the gun problem with me, you’re gonna be the one who leads this effort. I’m counting on you, I’m counting on you, we need you badly,” Biden told supporters at Dallas rally on the eve of Super Tuesday.

Democrats and Hillary Clinton particularly blamed Comey’s decision to reopen the bureau investigation into her handling of classified information and her use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state for her loss.

Comey was fired by President Trump in May 2017. Last year, the Justice Department’s inspector general found that Comey violated department policies and his FBI employment agreement over his handling of official information while serving as director.
