President Joe Biden has admitted communism is a failed system amid criticisms that the administration can’t take a stand against violent communist Cuba where protesters are hitting the streets to call for freedom.

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Merkel on Thursday, July 15, a reporter asked Biden to comment on his position on historic protests in Cuba and critics from the right who said he is soft on communism.

“Communism is a failed system, universally failed system,” Biden replied. “I don’t see socialism as a very useful substitute, but that’s another story.”

Biden added that Cuba is a failed state which is pressing its citizens, and the United States is considering several things to help the Cuban people.

Earlier on Thursday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki also affirmed that the Biden administration stands with the Cuban people.

Speaking to reporters at a press briefing, Psaki said that the administration supports Cuban protesters and their “call for freedom from both the pandemic and from decades of repression and economic suffering to which they’ve been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime,” Fox News reported.

“There is an ongoing review of our own policies, and as we look at those policies, one of the big factors is ensuring that we are not doing anything to pad the pockets of a corrupt, authoritarian regime,” Psaki said, adding that the White House is seeking to help the Cuban people in a humanitarian way.

The press secretary also call communism a “failed ideology.”

“Communism is a failed ideology, and we certainly believe that it has failed the people of Cuba,” Psaki told reporters.

“They deserve freedom, they deserve a government that supports them—whether that is making sure they have health and medical supplies, access to vaccines, or whether they have economic opportunity and prosperity instead—this has been a government, an authoritarian, communist regime that has repressed its people and has failed the people of Cuba,” Psaki said.

She said that the “ideology of the government, which has failed, and has led to a failure, a lack of access to economic opportunity, to medical supplies, to COVID vaccines,” contribute to the historic protests in Cuba.

On Thursday, former President Donald Trump released a statement to criticize Biden’s refusal to stand up to the Cuba’s communist regime.

“The Biden administration’s refusal to forcefully condemn Communism and the Cuban Communist Regime is a national travesty,” Trump said.

“The Biden Administration’s ludicrous suggestion that the Cubans are protesting government mismanagement—not brutal Communist oppression—is an insult to every Cuban patriot who has suffered, been imprisoned, or died in pursuit of freedom,” he added.

The former president claimed that a number of the Democratic Party have now become communists.

“Today’s Democrat Party is so far left they can’t even take a stand against violent Communism. Many are Communists themselves,” Trump said.
