President Trump drew much criticism from Democrats on Saturday, July 27, over a series of comments aimed at Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), and the Baltimore district that Cummings represents in Congress. But Sen. Bernie Sanders, a 2020 Democratic candidate, even had more to say about Baltimore in the past.

Only a few years ago, Sanders took his own shots at Baltimore, a struggling city grappling with high rates of violent crime, drug abuse, poverty, and political corruption.

“Anyone who took the walk that we took around this neighborhood would not think you’re in a wealthy nation,” Sanders said during a visit to the city’s West Baltimore section in December 2015, the Baltimore Sun reported. “You would think that you were in a Third World country,” according to The Sun.

“We’re talking about a community in which there are hundreds of buildings that are uninhabitable,” he added.

In 2016, Sanders posted a Twitter message about Baltimore.

“Residents of Baltimore’s poorest boroughs have lifespans shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea,” Sanders wrote. “That is a disgrace.”

In a series of tweets on Saturday, July 27, President Donald Trump criticized the representative of the Baltimore district, calling him a “brutal bully” who has been “shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous.”

But on this Saturday, Sanders appeared to forget his past critiques of Baltimore and focused on defending Cummings and targeting the president.

“It’s unbelievable that we have a president of the United Stated who attacks American cities, who attacks Americans who attacks somebody who is a friend of mine,” Sanders said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Here’s what’s really going on,” Sanders wrote. “@RepCummings has been busy revealing the failures of the Trump administration and exposing the greed of Trump’s friends in the pharmaceutical industry, and our racist president doesn’t like it.”

The president is referring to a hearing last week when Cummings—chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee—assailed Homeland Security chief Kevin McAleenan over the conditions of migrant detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Cummings’ District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place,” President Trump wrote.

“Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately,” the president added.

Before the president posted his first tweets on Thursday, a Fox TV show also aired a segment with Klacik calling Cummings’s district the “most dangerous” in the United States while showing shots of rundown buildings.
