A controversial Democrat removed social media content after being strongly criticized for appearing to be excited about impeaching the president.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) quickly backpedaled on her earlier remarks about voting on articles of impeachment against Donald Trump in the House of Representatives on Dec. 18. She removed a 14-second video of herself smiling and excitedly walking through a hallway on the way to vote in favor of impeaching the president.
“Hey everyone, I am on my way to the United States House floor to impeach President Trump,” Tlaib can be heard saying on the video that has since gone viral on Twitter.
Other people walking beside her, who appear to be her staff, can be heard laughing and shouting “woo” in the background.
“[I am acting] on behalf of my incredible 13th district,” Tlaib continued while smiling so widely she could hardly keep her eyes open.
The congresswoman also removed a selfie photo smiling with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and the caption “mood” and hashtag “#impeached,” according to Fox News.
This behavior appeared to be at odds with the official Democratic Party stance that impeaching the third president in the nation’s history was a “solemn,” “sad,” and “tragic” occasion.
“[House] Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Democrats pretending they were somber about impeachment was comical,” Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said on Twitter. “It was a foregone conclusion because—as you can see—they just could not help themselves. Hypocrites!”
House Democrats have charged Trump with abusing his power by allegedly asking the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter, and also obstruction of Congress by allegedly stonewalling investigations.
However, Trump Republican supporters slammed the charges as “weak” and highly divisive among voters.
“This will go down as the weakest case for impeachment in history, justifying the Founders’ fears of politically driven impeachment,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) said on Twitter. “Democrats pat themselves on the back, shamelessly proud of their dishonest manipulation of the truth, and a vote that has torn this country apart.”
When video even reached the office of the president he questioned how laughing about his impeachment would actually benefit the country.
“This is what the Dems are dealing with,” Trump said on Twitter. “Does anyone think this is good for the USA?”
Pelosi, who stopped other congressmen and congresswomen from applauding when she announced the vote for the first article of impeachment, did not respond immediately to a request for comment from Fox News.
