House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday, Aug. 30, accused President Donald Trump of “fanning the flames” of violence at protest in cities like Portland and Kenosha.

“The president is willfully fanning the flames of this fire,” Schiff said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “They believe this is helpful to him.”

“The president is only motivated by one thing: what is in it for him. He sees this violence and his ability to agitate more of it as useful to this campaign. What it does to the country, the loss of life, he doesn’t care,” Schiff claimed.

The Intelligence Committee chair made his comments one day after a man was shot and killed in Portland, Oregon, as clashes broke out between Black Lives Matter protesters and members of the pro-Trump convoy.

The victim was wearing a thin blue line patch on his shorts, signaling his support for law enforcement. He also had a hat with a logo for Patriot Prayer, a far-right group that has been leading counterprotests in Portland, the Washington Examiner reported.

Portland has endured over 90 nights of violence and looting following the death of black man George Floyd at the hands of white police officers in Minneapolis. Businesses have begun fleeing Portland due to the escalation in violence.

President Trump has offered to send more federal enforcement to Portland, but Mayor Ted Wheeler declined the president’s request publicly on Friday, one day before the shooting took place.

In a series of tweets and retweets on Sunday morning, President Trump condemned Wheeler’s leadership, calling the mayor “incompetent” for refusing to accept more troops before the protests turned violent.

“Wheeler is incompetent, much like Sleepy Joe Biden. This is not what our great Country wants. They want Safety & Security, and do NOT want to Defund our Police!” the president wrote.

“Our great National Guard could solve these problems in less than 1 hour. Local authorities must ask before it is too late. People of Portland, and other Democrat run cities, are disgusted with Schumer, Pelosi, and their local ‘leaders.’ They want Law & Order!” President Trump added.
