An older woman and younger man entered a McDonalds as complete strangers and left as good friends. A picture of the two bonding over a meal has spread like wildfire across the Internet.

Eric Haralson, 28, from Noblesville, Indiana, was having breakfast by himself at his local McDonalds and catching up on NBA games he missed the night before on his phone. That’s when he noticed an older lady, Jan Jessup, sitting at a table across from him. She had sat down with a random group of teenagers, whom she was hoping would join her whilst she ate her meal.

Jan was intrigued by one of the teenager’s man bun. Eric told Yahoo Lifestyle: “She asked him about [the man bun] and who helped him with that style because she has never seen it before and he responded with his mom, and then they exchanged a few words and she was off to get napkins.”

Unfortunately, whilst she went to get napkins the teenagers ran off, leaving her to have her meal alone. “She thought that she had scared them off,” Eric says. “She said that she just wanted conversation, because who really likes eating by themselves with no one to talk to?” So she turned to Eric and asked him whether she could join his table. The young man kindly said yes without hesitation.

The pair sat and talked about everything from how Jan wanted her car painted, to love and spiritual topics, for over 45 minutes. Eric got to know the woman well, whom he reckoned was between 60 or 70 years old. “She lives very close to the McDonald’s, and she used to have an obsession with Caramel Frappés until it made her sick one day. So now when she comes in, she usually gets a grilled chicken salad, which she had that morning,” he explained.

Whilst they were dining, a woman at a neighboring table noticed the pair and took a photo. She shared it on Facebook and summarized the event in her caption, writing: “Shout out to this guy! This elderly lady (seemed to be a little lonely) came up to him and asked if she could sit with him. Without hesitation, this guy said ‘of course’. My friends and I watched him introduce himself and shake her hand. They talked and laughed together like they were friends. They didn’t know each other, and they couldn’t be more different. But today they shared a meal together and it touched our hearts.”

After their meal, Eric walked Jan to her car and made plans to meet again soon. “We did exchange numbers and have not yet made contact, but hopefully we can make this a weekly or every other week ‘Happy Meal.’” In a world that seems to be becoming ever more divided, it’s great to see two very opposite people enjoying each other’s company over a meal.
