A 13-year-old Arizonan became an internet sensation after he stopped to help an elderly woman.

Dashawn Butler did not think twice when he offered to carry the older shopper’s items and walk her back to her car at Park Place Mall, 8 miles east of downtown Tucson.

However, mother Maria Lopez was so impressed by her son’s act of kindness she took photos and shared them on Instagram. The post has attracted more than 10,700 likes and hundreds of comments since Aug. 8, 2018.

“Proud mom praises her teenage son for taking the initiative and helping an elderly woman cross a parking lot,” Living While Black said on Instagram.

Butler is humble about his good deed, even though it has already made headlines across the United States and abroad.

He revealed he only wanted to help the struggling elderly lady safely cross the street to where her car was parked.

“She would not have thought she would make it to her car,” Butler said according to KOLD. “If anyone is in trouble or in the need, I would come in the way and help.”

Lopez was very proud of her son’s community spirit.

“[It] kind of blew me away,” she said according to the broadcaster. “Not that I did not expect anything like that from him, because he is such a good kid [and] he does a lot of things for people–I do not think I really expected that though.”

Lopez did not just take photos, she even filmed the entire incident on her cellphone. Footage clearly shows the teenager carefully guiding the woman off the concrete down onto the asphalt.

Butler was surprised by the overwhelming encouragement he received from complete strangers.

“I just try my best,” he said, hoping his actions will encourage others to help those in need.

Some of the many positive comments included “way to go, young man” and “he is setting an example for us all.”

“A lady even stopped and complimented him with tears in her eyes,” Lopez said on Instagram. “It truly takes a village [to raise a child] and our village is beyond proud, young man.”
