Since he was a teenager, an Italian man named Luca Trapanese has been involved in social services. He knew in his heart that he was going to be the father of the abandoned child when he held Alba, a baby girl born with Down syndrome who needed a family.

Alba was confronted with unfavorable circumstances from the moment she was born. First, because she had special needs, she was rejected by her parents. She was put up for adoption, but at least 20 families refused her—before Luca arrived.

The life of the blonde-haired child changed when Luca adopted her after being passed on by families unable to raise a baby with her special needs.

Luca had considerable volunteering experience with various social service projects from a few groups that he has supported since he was young, including the “A Ruota Libera” Foundation, a charity that provides assistance to Down syndrome children.

“Since I was 14 years old, I have volunteered and worked with the disabled so I felt I had the right knowledge and experience to do it,” he said.

Like any other adoption, it was very difficult to finalize this one. Adoption agencies prefer “traditional” families to those that do not comply with the specific characteristics represented by a conventional family.

“For me, a disabled child is not a second choice solution, but a conscious choice with respect to my vocation and my abilities,” he said.

Luca succeeded in his goal and is now a happy father to Alba, who since she came has brought so much joy to his life.

Fortunately, people with Down syndrome are now living better lives than they were in the past. Medical knowledge of the disorder was not widely available decades ago, so it was expected that babies born with the condition would face multiple health problems and have short lifespans.

Now, they can live healthy lives, work, have their own families, and most of all, make everyone happy about them. In fact, according to a study published by the American Journal of Medical Genetics, there are very high rates of happiness for families living with people with Down syndrome.

Of course, now that he has this little angel by his side, Luca could attest to that. He and Alba are now together for the happiest times of their lives!
