A 12-year-old boy in Oklahoma acted heroically when he broke through a car’s windshield and rescued a 2-year-old boy locked in a hot car on a hot summer day.

Ben, 12, and his mother arrived at a local shopping center to get some new shoes when they heard what sounded like a crying baby. Soon after, they spotted a 2-year-old boy was in the backseat of a nearby locked car.

While his mom called 911, the quick-thinking boy, focused on saving the child, grabbed a ratchet strap from his mother’s car to demolish the windshield.

“It wouldn’t bust. It would just bounce off, so I hit the front windshield and it cracked,” said Ben. “I started hitting it a lot more, then it busted open and we got some help from other people,” Ben said.

Nicole Fields, Ben’s mother recalled “I was scared because I don’t want to be in trouble, but I can’t leave this baby in the car either. He just jumped right into action and didn’t even hesitate.”

Officer Jeanne Pierce with the Tulsa Police Department said, “The heat index at the time that child was locked in this car… was 116 degrees,”

Police said the rescued toddler was red-faced and in a bit of distress. He was checked out by paramedics at the scene and and appeared to be OK.

Police found the toddler’s mother inside the store. She said it was an accident, and she thought another adult was watching the child.

The mother was ticketed $250 under Oklahoma’s “Forget Me Not” law, but was not arrested.

Thanks to Ben’s heroic actions, the little boy escaped any serious injury.

“I’m so proud of him,” the boy’s mother said.
