The United States has continued to promote the theory that the COVID-19 virus was released from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, angering Beijing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) mission lead says lab leak ‘likely’ and has introduced a new investigation team to end a verbal conflict between the United States and China over the origins of COVID-19, according to Yahoo! news.

As TheBL reported, the first news of the outbreak of COVID-19 or the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus in Wuhan took everyone by surprise. Initially, with the strength of its state media and propaganda spokespersons, the CCP gave life to the theory that a wet seafood market in Wuhan had been the source of the CCP virus.

However, U.S. intelligence pointed to the Wuhan Institute of Infectious Diseases (WVI), located a few meters from the seafood market, as the possible source of the virus because scientists there had been experimenting with the dangerous coronaviruses found mainly in bats.

In addition to that, bats cannot pass the virus directly to humans. So there would have to be an evolution or an intermediary for it to infect human cells.

Peter Ben Embarek, the WHO mission’s head, has since stated that the lab theory merits further investigation and that such a scenario is “likely.”

In a program broadcast in his home country of Denmark on Thursday, he said that China had disputed such a claim, claiming that it would be due to human mistake and that they are “not happy to admit it.”

On Friday, Aug. 13, the WHO called for a halt to “political point scoring” that has impeded investigations and urged all governments to work together to speed up research into the causes of the COVID-19 pandemic and not “politicise the situation.”

It noted that the new advisory group, the International Scientific Advisory Group for Origins of Novel Pathogens, would promote “the rapid undertaking” of further studies.

“We should work all together. You, me, everyone wants to know the origin of worst pandemic in a century,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said at a UN briefing on Friday.

The United States government praised the WHO plan on Friday, particularly its “emphasis on scientific-based studies and data driven efforts to find the origins of this pandemic so that we can better detect, prevent and respond to future disease outbreaks.”

International pressure is mounting on the CCP over the possibility the virus that caused the pandemic may have escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan and that it may be sued for millions of dollars in damages. The CCP reacted angrily and called for an investigation into the origin of the coronavirus at a U.S. military base.

On May 27, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian took specific aim at the U.S. military’s biological laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

“How many secrets are hidden in the US’ Fort Detrick lab and other biolabs overseas from the rest of the world?” Zhao asked. “What is the truth of the outbreaks of respiratory disease in northern Virginia in July 2019 and the e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak in Wisconsin? The U.S. owes the world an explanation.”
