STX Films has kicked off the 2019 CinemaCon convention with celebrity appearances from Chadwick Boseman, Kelly Clarkson, Diane Keaton and more Tuesday in Las Vegas.
The studio and distributor told the audience of theater owners that its slate of upcoming films provides an antidote to the big-budget tent pole films that dominate movie theaters year-round. STX specializes in mid-budget, star-driven films like “The Upside,” ”Second Act” and “Bad Moms.”
STX Chairman Adam Fogelson also says the studio is different from many others in that 18 percent of the films it has released have been directed by women.
Upcoming STX films include “21 Bridges,” Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman” and the retiree cheerleading comedy “Poms” starring Keaton.
CinemaCon runs through Thursday.
