Every rich man building a fortune from nothing has his own tale, but each one has the same 13 ‘good habits.’ These good habits are far from difficult for each for us to follow. Let’s take a look inside the behavior of the world ’s most successful people.

“One of the reasons transforming them from ordinary people into successful people with million or even billion-dollar- assets are ‘rich habits’.”

The above paragraph is from Thomas C. Corley, an American writer. He spent five years studying the daily habits of 177 self-made millionaires and billionaires.

“Through research, I discovered that your daily routine habits can reveal whether your success can be achieved or not” – Corley wrote in his new work ‘Changing habits, changing lives’ (Change Your Habits, Change Your Life).

“Habits predict a causal relationship. Habits determine wealth, poverty, happiness, grief, pressure, good and bad relationships, health or not.”

Corley said, “It is good that all habits can be changed and nurtured.”

Here are the 13 ‘rich habits’ of millionaires and billionaires that you can start fostering today.

Number 1: Reading books regularly

The rich like to read in order to educate themselves rather than to entertain. Corley writes, “88% of the rich read every day for at least 30 minutes, mainly self-study and self-improvement books. The vast majority do not read books to entertain. The rich read to absorb knowledge.

Comment: This habit completely matches the wisdom of the ancient Asian people: “Books mạkes one become noble” i.e. those who attach importance to reading books are really noble”

Number 2: Persistent exercising

“76% of the rich persist in doing outdoor activities every day for 30 minutes or more,” wrote Corley. Outdoor activities include jogging, short-distance running, fast running, and cycling.

Outdoor activities are not only good for your health but also helpful for the brain. Corley wrote, “Outdoor exercise can increase brain cells. Exercise can also increase glucose in the body, and glucose is the fuel for the brain. The more nutrients the brain receives, the better the brain develops, and the smarter you become.”

Comment: Outdoor physical training activities such as exercising, fitness, yoga, qigong … do not only help the body stay healthy, withstand pressure, help the brain be flexible and intelligent but also force the mind to become more resilient. And the key to success is a willpower, like the old saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”

Number 3: Networking with other successful people

“You will be successful like those who you regularly make friends with,” Corley wrote. “The rich always find people with clear, optimistic and positive goals to make friends [with].”

Comment: As an old proverb goes, “A man is known by the company he keeps.”  Good people exude strong spiritual power and positive energy that triggers positive, optimistic, enthusiastic thoughts in surrounding people.”

Number 4: Pursuing their own goals

“Pursuing your own dreams and goals makes you feel long-term happiness, that eventually can transform into wealth,” Corley also said. There are a lot of people who make the mistake of pursuing other people ‘s dreams (such as their parents). The rich are constantly improving their own goals and being patient and eager to pursue those dreams and goals.

“Enthusiasm makes work interesting,” Corley wrote. “Enthusiasm gives you the power to overcome failure, mistakes, denial, and helps you persevere.”

Comment: Only by identifying our own dreams and concise goals, can we put strength into one direction, avoid getting distracted by and wasting energy on other things.

Number 5: Persistent in getting up early

In Corley’s study, more than half of the millionaires and self-help billionaires who built fortunes from nothing, got up early, at least 3 hours ahead of the start of the work day. This is a strategy to deal with unexpected situations in the course of daily life and work, for example, prolonged meetings, traffic congestion, school attendance for sick children, and much more.

“These unexpected situations will have psychological effects on us, change our minds, ultimately make us feel like life is out of control,” Corley wrote. “Getting up at 5 am and completing the 3 most important things of the day’s work will help you keep your life under control, and give you confidence.”

Comment: Getting up early allows you plenty of time to prepare for work, and have enough time to deal with unexpected situations. When you are well-prepared for everything you will not be passive, you will be able to set up appropriate and optimal plans.

Persevering to get up early also shows a strong will and a careful mind, being well-prepared for the day. The ancients said, “By being well-prepared, one does not have to worry about anything that happens.”

Number 6: Having many sources of income

Corley points out that millionaires and billionaires who build fortunes from nothing often do not rely on a single source of income. They have many different sources. In his research, 65 percent of them before becoming millionaires had at least 3 sources of income.

Additional incomes include housing rentals, equity investments, side jobs, copyright material, etc.

Comment: For startups from virtually nothing, a little asset can also be a fortune, every business deal or investment is a gamble of all capital. No matter how good the calculations are, there is still an uncertain element as the saying goes, “Man proposes, God disposes.” Thus, they will think of every way to have more sources of income, so that in case they lose their entire fortunes, they can still live on and will not come to a dead-end. This also echoes ancient wisdom, “The wise rabbit digs three caves.”

Number 7: Having their own teacher

“Finding your own teacher can help you quickly accumulate wealth,” wrote Corley.

“Successful masters do not only have a positive impact on your life. By instructing you what to do, what not to do, they share with you their valuable successful experiences, which are from their own success or lessons of failure or from their masters.”

Comment: The ancients said, “Nothing can succeed without the help of the teacher,” Those who respect the teacher will find a master. The ancients said, “A master is like a bright light,” they are the guides for us to walk on the main road, a straight line, and avoid the detours, misdeeds, and pitfalls on the road.

Number 8: Having a positive human attitude

Only when you have a positive mental attitude can you achieve lasting success. In my research work, positively striving forward is the characteristic of all millionaires and billionaires who are self-reliant and building fortunes from nothing.

The problem is that most people cannot determine whether their thoughts are ultimately positive or negative. He explains, “If you stop to listen to your thoughts, to feel their existence, you will discover that most of the thoughts are negative. But only when you force yourself to see your inner mind will you be aware of the existence of these negative thoughts. Being aware of their existence is the most critical.”

Comment: Perhaps most people know that positive thinking leads to success and changes in life. In physiognomy, it is also said that the appearance is decided by inner thoughts, and the surrounding environment changes according to the mind. When the mind is good, the appearance and the spirit are nice. When the mind is positive, the circumstances and the surroundings also follow.

Number 9: Not an outstanding person

Successful people are not outstanding ones, but they know how to create their circle of influence and pull others into it. Corley said, “You need to let yourself emerge, then create your own circle of influence and bring others in.”

Comment: People who are too outstanding may have more difficulty succeeding, like a tall tree in the forest which is easily broken by the wind. Successful people are ordinary people, but they know how to create their own identity and charisma. The biggest attraction for people is personality, tolerance, kindness, thinking of others. The ancient people said, “The sea tolerates all rivers, thus its tolerance becomes large.”

Number 10: Polite speech and gesture

“The millionaires and billionaires starting with nothing firmly grasp the principles of social rituals. If you want to succeed, you must master these principles.”

These rituals include sending a thank-you letter, remembering important dates (such as wedding anniversaries or birthdays), mastering dining etiquette and dress code in different situations.

Comment: Confucius said, “Without understanding the rituals, there is no way to build a foothold in society.”

By understanding rituals, one would be able to understand social rules, know how to treat people properly at the right time, in the right place, and in the right case. People who do not know the rituals are like wild men. So the old saying, “Study manners before learning knowledge” still holds true in today’s civilized society.

Number 11: Helping others achieve success

“Helping others pursue goals and dreams while achieving success, also makes you benefit yourself. If there are no other successful people, success is also difficult to define. If you want to succeed, the best way is to help others succeed.”

But you should not help everyone. Corley said, “You should only help people who are optimistic and have clear and positive goals to pursue dreams.”

Comment: Those who help others succeed are those that possess virtue, and nobility, that others trust and wish to cooperate with. Confucius said, “The gentleman accomplishes good things for others and does not accomplish bad things for others.”

Number 12: Every day spend 15 – 30 minutes in contemplation

“Thinking is the key to their success.” Corley discovered this point. Rich people often sit alone in the early morning thinking for at least 15 minutes.

“Every morning they often think about a lot of things,” Corley explained, “including career, finance, health, and charity.”

They often ask themselves, “How can I make more money? Does my job make me happy? Is my training enough? What more charitable activities can I participate in?”

Comment: In the four daily questions they ask themselves, there are two questions more important than the others that would make them more successful, which is, “Does the job make me happy? and What more charitable activities can I participate in?” The first is to review whether the work you are doing benefits society, benefits others, and goes against ethics.

The second question is the key to achieving lasting wealth because millionaires and billionaires understand that wealth goes hand in hand with virtue.

Number 13: Looking for feedback

“For fear of criticism, we rarely expect others to comment on our ideas,” wrote Corley. Feedbacks actually helps you know if you are on the right path. If opinions reflect criticism, no matter whether it is good or bad, they are factors for you to study and grow.”

In addition, comments can help you adjust your focus, come up with new ideas and new paths.  As Corley wrote, “Criticisms provide information for you, helping you achieve success in any business.”

13 “habits of the rich” of the millionaires and billionaires mentioned above are like Corley said … “It is good that all habits can be changed and nurtured.”

Do you also want to become a billionaire? Start with these good habits.
