When Lamarr was 8 years old, his mom took him and moved away from his dad’s family as she felt it was a bad environment for him to grow up in. Without his dad’s support and supervision, at age 25, Lamarr committed a robbery and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Realizing he would spend his whole youth in prison, Lamarr was devastated and saw no light in his future.
His life only turned around in 2004, when he was transferred to San Quentin prison, where he had a chance to work with orphaned children. Because of his own past, he could relate to those children. He would share his life story and give them some sincere fatherly advice.
After being released, Lamarr successfully ran his own nonprofit organization for mentoring youth. In 2017, Lamarr’s health began to decline and he almost lost his nonprofit organization.
Gradually, he lost hope that he would recover. The two important women in his life, his ex-wife and his current girlfriend, realized what he really needed: his father by his side.
On his birthday in 2017, they decided to give him an unforgettable present. They found his dad, whom he had lost contact with 37 years before, and arranged a meeting. As soon as Lamarr saw his dad getting out of the car, he put his hands on his knees and hunched over, clearly overwhelmed by the encounter he had been waiting decades for. For Lamarr, being reunited with his dad freed his soul and brought happiness and hope back into his life.
Fathers have a big role in their children’s development. A boy, especially, needs his dad to be a good role model so he can learn what it means to be a man, and make his father proud of him. Life can be full of challenges, and sometimes we make mistakes. Whenever we are tired, our dad’s hug is always our favorite place to go for consolation.
The bond between father and son lasts a lifetime and is unchanged by time or space.
