There is a phenomenon gradually emerging in society in China’s big cities: the so-called “Dunzu” in Chinese means “squatting.”

These young people are highly educated but unemployed. They aren’t passionate about anything and have nothing to do for a long day. They don’t struggle and don’t like socializing, either. They just quietly enjoy the peaceful life that goes by every day in rented homes in cities.

According to Chinese media, the team of Ju Fasheng , a doctoral student in higher education at Nanjing University, conducted observations of the squatter group for half a year. 

What is the squat population like? 

The study shows that this group of “squatting” people come from middle-class families and enjoy a comfortable life. They do not have money pressure. 

Besides, these young people are not staying at home because of a lack of capacity. They have a good family background and may have graduated from prestigious universities. 

Why do they choose this lifestyle? 

One reason they choose to squat is they want to take an extended vacation. Besides, they have not found a suitable job that matches their interests and their family’s excessive expectations.

Another common trait is that these young people leave their jobs because they cannot find a sense of meaning and value in their workplace. They simply refuse to go to work. They feel depressed due to endless labor hours, demanding workplace culture, and discipline.

According to research, the difficult job situation during the two years of the COVID pandemic is also one of the reasons that affected the “squat population” and caused this group to spread into more cities.

Some say they feel lonely and anxious after squatting for a long time. They also worry about explaining the “do nothing” gap in the curriculum vitae to their employer.

According to the expert, young people should adjust their job expectations according to their abilities, and the work environment needs to help them eliminate the habit of “squatting” at home. In addition, communicating with relatives and friends and seeking psychological help is also important.
