On Feb. 26, Yahoo Inc announced that it would stop mailbox service in China as of Feb. 28, 2022.

Yahoo recommends its users download and backup data by February 28; then users will no longer receive or send emails from China.

AP reported Yahoo withdrew from China last year, citing an increasingly challenging operating environment, but it still retains a small number of services such as mailboxes.

In a statement issued last year, the company said, “In recognition of the increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China, Yahoo’s suite of services will no longer be accessible from mainland China as of November 1.”

Yahoo’s departure coincided with the implementation of China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), which puts companies at financial and legal risks.

PIPL, which took effect on Nov. 1, 2021, was applied to all companies looking to conduct business in China, whether they are established in the country or not.

Under the law, any organizations or individuals need approval from Chinese authorities regarding providing any personal information they have that is stored in China to any foreign judicial or law enforcement authority.

Violators of the PIPL may face an administrative fine of up to 50 million yuan or 5% of the processor’s turnover in the previous year (It doesn’t specify if this is global or China-only revenue). In addition, non-compliant organizations may find their business license suspended, or their company shut down entirely.
