China’s President Xi Jinping has appointed a new president for Xinhua News Agency, as he is trying to grasp the control of the Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpiece ahead of its 20th National Congress.

Xinhua reported that the State Council, or China’s cabinet, announced the appointment on June 7.

According to the announcement, Fu Hua replaced He Ping as president of Xinhua News Agency and is no longer the editor-in-chief.

Lyu Yansong then filled the position of editor-in-chief of the state-owned agency.

Before being promoted, Fu Hua served as the chief editor for one year, and Lyu Yansong served as deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department for more than half a year.

Earlier, Li Shulei, a close associate of Xi Jinping, took office as executive deputy director of the new Central Propaganda Department.

It is unclear about the post of He Ping after he was dismissed the president.

According to Apollo News, Fu Hua was born in 1964, a native of Jiangsu Province. He has worked in the propaganda system of Beijing for a long time.

Fu Hua served as deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, president of the party leading group of Beijing Daily, vice chairman of the China Journalist Association, member of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department. Since last June, he has served as the editor-in-chief of Xinhua News Agency.

Lu Yansong, born in 1967, is a wealthy man in Heilongjiang. He has been engaged in reporting international news for a long time. Lu served as the director and deputy editor-in-chief of the International Department of People’s Daily, a member of the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee, and the head of the Propaganda Department.

The intensive changes in leading positions in the propaganda system mean that General Secretary Xi Jingping would continue to control the party’s ideological powerhouse. In this way, he could prevent anti-Xi factions from challenging his leadership authority.
