Wuhan University in Hubei province, central China now gained public attention after a case of cholera was found in one of the school’s dormitories.

On the evening of July 9, a suspected case of cholera appeared in the student dormitory of the Faculty of Engineering of Wuhan University. After that, in addition to a lockdown of the entire dormitory area, the school required all students in the area to undergo anal swab tests.

Nearly two days after the suspected case was detected, on the 11th, Wuhan Wuchang Municipal Health Commission confirmed that the infected case was cholera.

After being tested, this case was determined to be positive for O139, diagnosed as cholera. The patient’s condition was controlled, and the symptoms disappeared

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.”

Wuhan University and Wuchang District Health Commission on July 11 said that the test results for students had not yet been received and that they were unsure of how long the students would need to be quarantined.

According to the authorities, nearby locations have been sealed off and disinfected, and no new cases have been detected.

Right after the news about a suspected case of cholera broke out, the topic quickly became top of Weibo’s hot search list, which has been racked up more than 200 million times. Another keyword, “Wuhan university unified anal swab test,” ranked second.

Xiwang Zhisheng cited many Wuhan University students’ posts on Weibo, in which they expressed their anger.

One wrote: Why Wuhan again? This coincidence couldn’t be more coincidental.

Some even complained about the poor sanitary conditions of the student dormitories; even some toilets did not have water. [Video 0:56- 1:14]

One said: I hope there will be an improvement in the student dormitory (including the medical faculty). The dormitory has dozens of people. The bathroom is really dirty.
