After graduating, more Hongkongers now apply for graduate work visas in Australia.

According to the South China Morning Post, since Australia created a scheme designed explicitly for Hongkongers, approximately 3,000 Hongkongers have applied to stay and work in Australia after graduation. More than double as many people applied in 2020–2021 and 2021–2022.

The move came after Beijing imposed its national security law in the city.

According to official figures collected by the South China Morning Post, 38,600 Hongkongers under 18 applied for the British National (Overseas) (BNO) between January 31, 2021, and June 30 this year.

Besides Australia, Britain, and Canada eased their entry rules for Hongkongers. Schemes to attract fresh graduates are also included.

Australia provides visas to about 3,000 Hong Kong students each year, mainly for higher education.

Graduate work visa holders who have completed a course of at least two years and lived in Australia for three or four years are eligible to apply for permanent residency.
