A new pandemic wave has emerged throughout China, showing rapid development. On August 6th, Zhejiang officials reported that their current pandemic is an Omicron BA. 5.2 mutant strain with five generations found in cases within only six days.

According to CCTV, Zhejiang’s official news on August 6, there was a cluster of the virus in Yiwu City, Jinhua that spread from outside the province on August 2. As of 14:00 on August 6, there were 218 local positive infections, including 213 cases in Jinhua City, 2 cases in Zhuji City, Shaoxing, 1 in Wenzhou City, and 1 case in Jiangshan City, Quzhou. At this time 92.7% of the infected people were found in the key control population.

According to Red Star News, on August 6th, the 120th press conference of the COVID-19 pandemic in Zhejiang Province reported that the virus was identified as Omicron BA. 5.2. The mutant strain has a shorter incubation period, stronger transmission, and spreads faster compared to previous strains. There have been five generations of cases in just six days.

The hardest-hit area of Zhejiang’s current pandemic is Jinhua Yiwu City. As of 2:00 pm on the 6th, Yiwu had a total of 193 local positive infections. The Qingkou Night Market has become an important transmission point this time. The strain in Yiwu has spread to Lanxi, Pujiang, and Dongyang in Jinhua City, as well as Lishui, Shaoxing, Zhuji and other places outside Jinhua City.

Yiwu has a reputation as “the world’s largest wholesale market”; therefore, the pandemic in Yiwu has attracted particular attention. Yiwu City, known as the ”World’s Largest Retail Trade Capital,” officially announced a “city closure” early in the morning on August 5th. The city’s bus service was suspended for three days, and citizens were required not to leave their homes if not necessary. The businesses will be closed, and nucleic acid testing for all employees will be carried out throughout the city.

In a single day, 17 provinces in the mainland reached 1,270 high-risk areas.

According to data from the official website of the National Health Commission of China, on August 5, 310 new local confirmed cases were reported in 31 provinces, regions, and cities. There were 275 new cases of asymptomatic local citizens. 

As of 11:30 pm on August 5, there were 96,867 close contacts and 5,238 asymptomatic infections still under medical observation. Although the official data on the panemic is available to the public, the veracity of the infection numbers is generally questioned.

According to Sina, as of midnight on August 6, there were 386 high-risk areas, 884 medium-risk areas, and 82 low-risk areas in the country.
