In an interview with CNN broadcast on October 2, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that he does not see the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan in the near future.

He sees that China is changing its mode of action, which the U.S. called a “new normal” for military activities around Taiwan.

Austin detailed that China has increased flights through the center line of the Taiwan Strait. Besides, China’s surface vessels increased activities around Taiwan.

In an interview on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” that was recorded two days before the broadcast, Austin said the U.S. will continue to cooperate with its allies and partners “to ensure that we maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Austin also revealed he had a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe. The two agreed that open communication was critical.

Beijing was furious when the U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August.
In retaliation, the Chinese regime held successive large-scale military exercises around Taiwan. However, according to Reuters, the density and scale of these exercises have decreased over time.
