“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream,” that’s all well and good, but wait—not everyone screams in happiness about ice cream like the song lyrics describe.

Shanghai-based Zhong Xue Gao, known as the “Hermes of ice cream,” has gained popularity since its establishment in early 2018. However, on Wednesday, controversy surrounded the company.

Recently, Chinese netizens have conducted several tests on products of a luxury Chinese ice-cream brand, Zhong Xue Gao.

On July 5, many videos circulated on mainland China social media showing netizens using a lighter to try and burn the brand’s ice cream. [Video] [Video]

In the video, smoke can be seen when a flame is applied to the ice cream to burn it.

Surprisingly, the ice cream resisted the flame of a lighter and didn’t melt.

This incident caught netizens’ attention regarding food safety in China.

Many left comments to express their thoughts after the news broke out.

One netizen said: “Can you make leather shoes [from this]?”

Another wrote: “Zhong Xue Gao ice cream: a new type of high temperature resistant and fire-resistant building material.”

In this regard, Zhong Xue Gao stated on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo on July 6 that all its products meet China’s national quality standards.

The statement said that the main components of the sea salt coconut-flavored ice cream are milk, single cream, coconut pulp, condensed milk, and milk powder. Forty percent of this ice cream is solid materials.

The company said each ice cream product weighing 78 grams contains 0.032 grams of carrageenans. These carrageenans are extracted from red algae.

It added that carrageenans are widely used in ice creams and beverages.

According to the South China Morning Post, however, there is some indication that it can result in health issues, including cancer. However, this is debatable as the data only comes from studies on cells and animals.

Before this controversy, the brand’s sea salt and coconut flavored ice cream, left at room temperature of 31 degrees Celsius (about 88 degrees Fahrenheit) for nearly an hour without melting, aroused the public’s attention. [Image below]

Zhong Xue Gao stated on Weibo on July 2 that the Salt Coconut ice cream didn’t seem to melt at 31degrees Celsius because it has a high percentage of solid matter, which prevents it from melting entirely and turning into a puddle of liquid.
