As VOA Chinese reported on May 16, Taiwan’s security bureau confirmed that mainland China has trained and paid some local internet celebrities in Taiwan. This is because China wants to spread false information on the Internet to influence Taiwanese people’s cognition and to achieve its goal of a united front.
National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Chen Ming-tong gave an example of Beijing’s tricks.
He said that following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, a Taiwanese internet celebrity on TikTok claimed the Chinese government was offering to evacuate Taiwanese citizens trapped in Ukraine.
According to Chen Ming-tong, the NSB later found out that the person was not in Ukraine but from Hangzhou, China. That person had been trained by the Chinese government to use social media to spread propaganda. This move is part of China’s “united front” efforts.
