Another super cold wave has swept across China, affecting most provinces and cities. Nearly 70% of the country’s land has been frozen, with blizzards in many places. As a result, flights are canceled, traffic is also paralysed, outages have been reported as well as economic losses, according to the region.
According to China Fund News, since the morning of Dec. 26th, 18 major cities in China had the lowest temperature this winter. Major cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Changsha fell to freezing point for the first time in the second half of the year.
There were also 1029 early warning information around the country since the morning of December 27th, including 517 icy roads, 137 cold waves, and 115 snowstorms.
As Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reported, 54 counties and cities in Hunan Province experienced snow cover as of 02:00 PM on Dec. 26th, with 36 counties and cities above 5 cm, of which 17 counties and cities exceeded 10 cm. The Huaihua area of Hunan has snow cover up to 21cm, making it the second greatest snowfall in the area in the past 30 years.
Due to the snow, traffic in Hunan Province was disrupted. On Dec. 26th, some high-speed sections adopted control measures for vehicles. Hunan Changsha Huanghua Airport originally scheduled for 378 take-off and landing flights; however, as of 10:30 AM on the same day, 37 flights had been canceled.
Snow fell heavily in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, on December 26th. Wanshan Town has 7 centimeters of snow. Moderate-to-heavy snowfall in Dejiang County, Guizhou Province, also caused several power outages.
On December 26th, heavy snowfall and even blizzards occurred in many places in Chongqing. This is the heaviest snowfall this year in Chongqing, unexpected snowfall has greatly affected road traffic in many parts of this city.
As of 5:00 PM on Dec. 26th, due to the impact of snowfall and freezing, 26 sections of 5 highways and 16 provincial and national highways in Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou were closed. Also, Guangdong province for the first time in the second half of 2021 has issued 14 extreme cold warnings of the highest level.
On the evening of December 26th, Roshow Technology announced that due to the impact of extreme weather blizzards in Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, many power stations of Tongliao Juneng and Tongliao Sunshine Power Company had collapsed to varying degrees.
COFCO Sugar previously announced that due to extreme weather resulting from La Nina, the company’s net profit this year will be reduced to 180 million yuan (more than 28 million USD) from 300 million yuan (more than 47 million USD).
