The memoir “Red Roulette” by businessman Shen Dong (Desmond Shum), living in England, was published on September 7, 2021. “Red Roulette” is an inside story of contemporary China’s wealth, power, corruption, and vengeance. The book tells about the extremely intense power struggles between the top leaders of the CCP, including Sun Zhengcai.

Sun Zhengcai, the former secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Chongqing Municipal Party Committee, was arrested on accusations of “criminal receipt of bribery” on December 11, 2017.

Becoming Jiang Zemin’s political ally, Sun Zhengcai gains entry into the Beijing Municipal Party Committee

In the 1990s, Jiang Zemin was described as the leader of a “Shanghai gang” comprised of associates as the party’s boss in that city. During Jiang’s thirteen years as CCP General Secretary, “Shanghai Gang” officials created networks at all central and local Party and State institutions. They were the most potent political force in the country at the time.

According to reports in the international press, when Sun Zhengcai was mayor of Shunyi, he gave land to Zeng Qinghong’s son Zeng Wei. Zeng Qinghong, Jiang Zemin’s general manager, was the director of the Central Office at the time.

As a result of Zeng Qinghong’s recommendation to Jia Qinglin, the secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and a Jiang faction member, Sun Zhengcai was promoted to Secretary-General of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee.

The book “Red Roulette” reveals that, in 2002, Sun Zhengcai licensed several real estate projects to his allies, including close associates of Zeng Qinghong. Also, in that year, Sun Zhengcai entered the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee. He was only 39 years old at the time.

The author’s ex-wife, Duan Weihong, was a strong supporter of Sun Zhengcai. She guided Sun throughout his political strategy to ensure Sun followed the path to promotion. When Wen Jiabao was prime minister, Duan Weihong was particularly flattered with Mrs. Wen and supported Sun Zhengcai in his position.

In December 2006, Wen Jiabao supported Sun Zhengcai’s promotion to Minister of Agriculture, making the 43-year-old Sun Zhengcai one of the two youngest ministers in China.

Sun Zhengcai’s same fate with other political officials in Jiang Zemin’s faction

On October 19, 2017, Liu Shiyu, Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, accused Bo Xilai, Zhou Yongkang, Ling Jihua, Xu Caihou, Guo Boxiong, Sun Zhengcai, and others at a panel discussion meeting of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China for “holding high positions in the party and being extremely corrupt. They are corrupt and conspiring to usurp the party and seize power.”

In May 2018, Sun Zhengcai was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Shen Dong, the author of “Red Roulette,” believes that Bo Xilai, Ling Jihua, and Sun Zhengcai’s fall are all the results of the CCP’s power struggle.

In addition, to winning Jiang Zemin’s favor, these people have incurred heavy debts in the campaign to suppress Falun Gong launched by Jiang Zemin, according to US-based senior journalist Dr. Tang Qing.

When Sun Zhengcai was in power in Beijing, Shunyi, Jilin, Chongqing, and other places, vicious incidents of large-scale persecution of Falun Gong occurred frequently.

The book also reveals many high-level inside stories, such as the privileges of Jiang Zemin’s family, the inside stories of Jia Qinglin’s daughter-in-law; how Bo Xilai was forced to step down by Hu Wenxi’s joint sniper, the downfall of Ling Jihua, and the privileges of the CCP leaders and their children.
