Shanghai, China’s financial hub, began administering a needle-free, inhalable COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, October 26.
The AP cited an announcement posted on an official city social media account. The dose is given for free as a booster dose for people who were previously vaccinated.
The dose is administered using a cup that contains the vaccine’s aerosol. The receiver inhales deeply from the cup, holds their breath for about five seconds, and then slowly exhales.
One Shanghai resident said, “It was like drinking a cup of milk tea,” adding, “When I breathed it in, it tasted a bit sweet.”
Shanghai announced on Tuesday that it would offer an inhaled version of CanSino Biologics’ injected Covid-19 vaccine as a booster for people aged 18 and older.
The inhalable vaccine, authorized by China’s top drug regulator in early September, was first offered in this city.
According to hospital workers, more than 30 patients received the vaccine in the morning at Tianshan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital on Wednesday.
The municipal government stated on Tuesday that the conditions for inhaled vaccines are people who have had the primary vaccination and have not had their first booster shot.
