Shanghai, China’s major financial hub, reported 21,222 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, April 8. With 824 new symptomatic and 20,398 new asymptomatic cases, the city sets a straight daily record for the seventh consecutive day.
One day earlier, the number of asymptomatic cases was 19,660, while the number of symptomatic cases was 322.
The world’s busiest container port city is going through a mandated city-wide lockdown as authorities try to tame the country’s biggest ever COVID-19 outbreak since the virus took hold in 2020. The lockdown has lasted for more than a week.
Since the outbreak occurred on March 1, Shanghai has recorded more than 131,000 cases, as the highly transmissible Omicron variant defeated the city’s attempt to contain it at once.
