On November 26, many Shanghai residents gathered on Urumqi Road in Shanghai to remember the fire victims in Urumqi.

People chant slogans, “Communist Party step down! Xi Jinping step down.”

The police stood aside at first. But then, they entered the protest crowd and began arresting protesters.

The police threatened to accuse the protesters of picking quarrels and provoking trouble.

Shanghai police blocked the entrances of Urumqi, leaving only one exit for people to leave, but those at the scene did not go.

On the same day, students from Nanjing Media Academy, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and many other universities also mourned the victims in Urumqi.

Discontent caused by the fire in Urumqi, Xinjiang, spread quickly. People in many cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, took to the streets to protest. Many places held memorials for the dead and carried protest slogans.
