According to Bloomberg, Shanghai’s 25 million residents remain under lockdown amid a new COVID-19 surge. At the same time, Guangzhou proposed citywide COVID testing plans in a bid to curb the Omicron variant outbreak.
China reported 25,701 new cases on April 8, of which more than 23,600 cases were from Shanghai. Shanghai Municipal Health Commission announced on April 9 a record of 1,015 new COVID confirmed cases and 22,609 asymptomatic infections.
China’s financial hub implemented its two-stage partial lockdown on March 28, and now it has been reportedly extended to the whole of Shanghai. Citizens who have been trapped in their houses vented on social media to express their frustrations.
Meanwhile, China Central Television reported that mass COVID testing for Guangzhou’s 11 districts would be carried out from April 8.
