In the early morning of Sept. 1, a landslide occurred in a village in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Haidong City, Qinghai Province, China. As a result, two local junior high school buildings and two nearby houses were buried, causing the deaths of six people, and one person was missing.

According to CCTV, 10 people were rescued, but six people were killed (including the head of the Weiyuan town police station and a policeman), and another is still missing. Currently, rescue work is underway.

According to Beijing News, at 3 p.m., officials from Hongya village, Weiyuan town, said there had been frequent rains in the locality recently. The heavy rain at the beginning of August caused flash floods. On Aug. 31, there were abnormal signs on one side of the mountain, and a landslide occurred in the early morning of Sept. 1.
According to the news agency, some residents reported that at around 1 a.m. on Sept. 1, they heard a loud noise about three miles from the landslide point. Dogs barking awakened some people.

The newspaper quoted a resident recounting: “I checked the time on my phone. It was around 0:40 a.m. Moments later, I saw a village official sending a message in the WeChat group saying there was a landslide and urged everyone to evacuate quickly.”

People also said that they and their families immediately evacuated to the road near the village. At that time, it was very dark. They could not see the situation on the mountain clearly, only heard a series of loud noises coming from the mountain not far away. They described it as loud as the sound of a cannon.

Some villagers of Hongya said that recently there had been some heavy rain in the village. The landslide happened on a mountain with many poplars and pine trees. A large area of arable land is at the foot of the mountain, but the crops in the fields were washed away during the recent autumn harvest. The entire village has now been evacuated.

According to the Emergency Management Department of Qinghai province, three large-scale landslides occurred in Hongya village, Weiyuan town, Haidong city. The volume of landslides is about 3.2 to 3.8 million cubic meters, causing casualties and many people trapped.

At 4:10 on Sept. 1, the Qinghai Provincial Public Emergency Management Committee launched the provincial level III geological disaster emergency response. There is information on the Internet that recently, in Qinghai province, frequent landslides have occurred.

For example, a video posted by Twitter user @JosephZheng777 showed that at 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 29, a landslide occurred in Dongxia town, Xining city, Qinghai province, causing many houses to be buried in an instant. Another video posted by the account @CoverNews1 showed a slow-motion landslip on a mountain in Dongxia town, Xining, Qinghai. The earth was moving slowly, at 30 meters per hour.
