An anonymous senior Taiwanese security official told Reuters that China’s regime could apply a strategic blockade of Taiwan or seize an offshore island. This move would be seen as an act of war.
Regarding China possibly attacking Taiwan offshore, Reuters cited military strategists saying that Kinmen and Matsu archipelagos could be targets for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s military.
The official said, “Their only purpose to seize [offshore islands] is to force us to negotiate or surrender. But we will not surrender or negotiate.”
The official gave the above comments since the CCP has been ramping up the pressure by military threats on Taiwan after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the Island in early August.
The anonymous official also said that Taipei will not rule out the possibility that China’s regime will hold large-scale military exercises close to Taiwan next year, coinciding with the Island’s preparations for the presidential election in early 2024.
The official shared, “This is what we are worried about at the moment,” adding that CCP could increase its “grey-zone” tactics near Taiwan, such as incursions with militia boats or cyber-attacks.
The official suggested the U.S, EU, and Japan should join the force to deter the CCP’s ambitions for Taiwan.
