According to Liberty Times, Chinese netizens severely criticized some of the illustrative contents in elementary textbooks in China. For example, they said that some illustrations are too ugly.
In the lesson about “sweat,” the illustration picture is quite bizarre. Two characters who look like children hold a woman’s hand and lick her arm. One of them said, “Sister, you are so beautiful; what does your sweat smell like?” The other said: “Uh, it’s salty too.” The woman in the picture seems to be quite proud.
Some netizens pointed out that the book, including the mentioned illustrations, was published in 2012. It initially showed a person licking a woman’s arm. However, after the second and third editions in 2015 and 2018, the illustration became more obscene.
Chinese netizens bombarded the internet with questions about how this kind of children’s book passed the review.
According to NTD, on May 26, the mainland’s “Personal Education Edition Mathematics Textbook” became a hot topic on Weibo.
After many years, the illustrations of the characters in the mathematics textbooks got the attention of netizens for collective complaints. They said that eye distance was too separated in the images, the hairline was too high, the eyes were strange, and poking out the tongue was too exaggerated.
The topic of “Personal Education Edition Mathematics Textbook” has always occupied the top spot on Weibo’s hot search list and is among the top eight hot search topics. In contrast, related topics were the fifth-highest rank.
Many netizens are concerned that such illustrations will affect children’s aesthetic development and negatively affect their physical and mental health.
The pressure of public opinion forced the People’s Education Publishing House to announce that it had begun to redraw the cover and some illustrations of the relevant textbooks.
