On the afternoon of October 14, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wu Zhaoxieben, had an online meeting with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Czech Senate, Pavel Fischer, and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of Ukraine, Oleksandr Merezhko.

According to the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Wu thanked the Czech Republic for not shying away due to pressure from Beijing not to hold this meeting.

Wu also admired the Ukrainian people for their bravery against the invading enemy.

Minister Wu said that Taiwan has been at the forefront of fighting against authoritarian forces and that Ukraine has inspired and encouraged Taiwan a lot.

Wu pointed out that democratic societies are facing a threat from authoritarianism. And China’s regime has repeatedly undermined the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by sending aircraft breaking the center line of the strait and conducting exercises in preparation for an invasion of Taiwan.

Minister Wu emphasized that China’s ambitions are not limited to Taiwan. They also want to expand in the East China Sea, South China Sea, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and other regions.

In addition, China’s regime brutally suppressed the Hong Kong democracy movement, and Russia blatantly annexed Crimea in 2014, but the world did not have strong enough sanctions against Beijing and Moscow. Instead, it encouraged further expansion of authoritarian regimes.

Taiwan’s top diplomat called on the democracies at this critical time to unite to stand up for each other and fight against authoritarian forces.

Merezhko said that China’s regime turned its back on Kyiv to ally with Russia, but Taiwan promptly extended a helping hand to Ukraine.

Merezhko also called on democratic countries to jointly prepare military, legal, political, and economic measures to prevent China’s regime from invading Taiwan.

Wu shared that the regime’s drills following the visit of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan show that Beijing is not happy to see the international community’s support for Taiwan.

Wu believes the world’s support for Taiwan is the best way to deter China’s regime. Therefore, Wu welcomes like-minded partners to continue to send delegations to visit Taiwan.
