A video has caught the moment that a man was struck by lightning while rowing a dragon boat. The accident took place in the Shishi shíshī River Basin of Quantang Town, Xiangxiang City, Hunan Province on June 3.

It is raining cats and dogs, and the river is flowing relatively fast. There are two boats in the middle of the river.

Suddenly, a bolt of long lightning struck a man on the tail of one of the boats, accompanied by thunder.

As a result, the unfortunate man falls into the river and loses contact with the crew.

The local authorities confirmed the accident on the following day. As of 10 am on June 4, that man was still missing.

Many relevant groups carry out rescue operations, such as public security, firefighter, and rescue teams.

Although they rush to the scene, the river runs so fast that the rescue work faces many difficulties.

A resident says there has always been the custom of dragon boat rowing at the Dragon Boat Festival. However, this year, the local government strictly prohibits residents from entering the water and rowing dragon boats without permission due to safety concerns.

Xiangxiang Municipal Government issued a notice as early as May 30 regarding dragon-boating restrictions during flood control and epidemic prevention and control, with the ban lasting from May 31 to June 8.

Dragon Boat Festival is one of the 4 top traditional Chinese festivals, along with the Spring Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, and Mid-Autumn Festival.

It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. In 2022, this festival was held on June 3, which attracted 11 competition teams to gather at Miluo city, Hunan Province, for the dragon boat race.
