Liao Guoxun, 59 years old, who directly presided over the persecution of Falun Gong, died of a sudden illness in Tianjin on April 27. He served as deputy director of the “610” Office of Guizhou Province and Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Law and Political Committee.
During the six months that Liao Guoxun served as secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Law and Political Committee, 79 Falun Gong practitioners were kidnapped, 86 were harassed, and 11 were illegally convicted.
As of 2018, more than 20,000 members of the Chinese state participating in the crackdown have had bad luck. Here are some cases where China’s vice mayor has had bad luck in the past two years:
Gong Daoan, Vice Mayor of Shanghai and director of the city’s Public Security Bureau, was investigated for “serious violations of discipline and law.”
Yang Jianjun, Vice Mayor of Shenyang, was investigated in 2021 on suspicion of “violating the provisions of the law.”
During Yang Jianjun’s tenure as Deputy Mayor and Director of the Shenyang Public Security Bureau, six Falun Gong practitioners in Shenyang City were tortured to death. Also, a Falun Gong practitioner was kidnapped by the police and sentenced to three years in prison.
Xu Honglan, 54, from Honghu, Hubei, is being investigated for suspected “violation of discipline and law.” Xu Honglan participated in the persecution of Falun Gong, and one of them was taken to prison and then tortured to death.
Yan Shengbo, 51, was a former captain, deputy director, and political commissar of the criminal police department of the Laiyang Yantai Public Security Bureau. He actively followed the CCP to participate in the persecution of Falun Gong.
On September 6, 2018, Chang Jian jumped from the 6th floor of the town hall hall in Yushu to attempt suicide, breaking his ribs, collarbone, and ankle. Chang Jian also held brainwashing classes with Li Fenglin, the leader of the “610”, and kidnapped 50–60 Falun Gong practitioners.
At least 50 officials and police in Yushu have committed the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong. They include the chief of police, the chief judge, the director of the police station, the people’s police, the secretary of the town committee, the secretary of the village, etc.
Falun Gong practitioners continued to be severely persecuted by the CCP in 2021. At least 101 people have died due to the Chinese government’s repression. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) released its report on April 25.
The committee recommended that the U.S. expand sanctions against China to include “targeting Chinese officials and entities that seriously violate religious freedom.” The United States has imposed sanctions on two CCP officials directly involved in the persecution of Falun Gong. Twenty-seven countries have passed the Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which gives authority to the U.S. government to sanction foreign officials identified as human rights offenders. Their assets can be frozen, and they can also be banned from entering the U.S.
