A COVID outbreak has surfaced in Jiangsu province. The province’s health commission reported over 90 new infections in Shangrao City on April 26. That increased the confirmed cases to over 150, and all are in Wannian County. On the same day, Wannian County antigraft department reported eight officials that failed to perform anti-epidemic duties adequately.
According to mainland media Sina, a group of officials slept in their room and played on their mobiles while working on April 24. That included Sun Haisheng, leader of the isolation point at Fenglin Wan Hotel. He and his three other colleagues work as the county’s party school staff. Due to their irresponsibility, two medical staff and a security officer had to take up unfinished work. As a result, the whole work process was slowed down and ineffective.
Another case is Xu Renping, the deputy director at the county’s construction security center. Local authorities assigned Xu to lead a COVID test collection point in a community. But since April 24, the deputy director remained in the office and neglected his work at the collecting site, and Xu Renping was sacked shortly after.
Tao Yutao, a fourth-level urban planning official, was also in charge of an isolation site. The report said staff at the hotel had conveyed a few problems to him on April 23. However, the local inspection team later found out that Tao was unaware of the situation and his duties.
As for the two other officials, the report said they didn’t participate in the nucleic acid test collecting work on April 24.
Wannian authorities have started imposing partial lockdowns across the county. Schools are closed, and public transport is suspended. As of April 25, the county has already carried out four rounds of COVID testing.
