Hong Kong media “Sing Tao Daily” on Dec. 15 reported that Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the “Global Times,” retired. Wu Qimin, Deputy Director of the International Department of “People’s Daily,” will be Xijin’s successor for a few months before handing the business over to Fan Zhengwei, also from People’s Daily.
Fan Zhengwei, deputy director of the commentary department of People’s Daily, a newspaper of the Central Committee of the China Communist Party (CCP), was born in 1980 in Shaanxi. After 2006, he worked at the review department of the People’s Daily. Fan has repeatedly participated in reporting on the main activities of the CCP Central Committee.
Zhang Zhenyu, a former reporter of the CCP, told “Watch China” that Hu Xijin could thrive in the media field because “Global Times” was the top-earning newspaper in China. The newspaper’s success came mainly because of its role as an influential foreign propaganda newspaper.
Global Times curates foreign news for domestic readers. They compile many overseas trending articles and rewrite them “in favor” of the CCP. This is one of their usual methods.
Zhang Zhenyu said that Hu only served the political party and did not report the truth. Hu always flattered the CCP, and defending the party was his role.
