On November 8, Tianjin No. 1 Intermediate Court sentenced Liu Guoqiang, a former senior political advisor of Liaoning Province, to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes.
According to information publicly available on the court’s website, Liu was convicted of accepting bribes totaling more than $48 million (352 million yuan).
The court statement shows that Liu abused the public positions he held while working in Liaoning to benefit specific businesses and individuals by way of project approval, getting funding, job advancement, and other issues.
Liu Guoqiang took the initiative to confess to the crime and had been cooperative in returning his illegal gains. Therefore, the court offered him leniency. Nevertheless, he was sentenced to death with a two-year suspension of execution.
