As Taiwan News reported, China’s regime again sent military planes to intrude on Taiwan’s air identification zone (ADIZ) on May 20. It is the 15th time Chia’s military planes have entered Taiwan’s air space this month.
According to the Ministry of National Defense (MND), fourteen Chinese military planes flew into the southwest corner of Taiwan’s ADIZ.
In response to China’s behavior, the Taiwan military sent aircraft, issued radio warnings, and deployed air defense missile systems to monitor China’s warplanes from across the strait as on previous occasions.
According to Taiwan News, MND said that since September 2020, Beijing has stepped up its gray zone tactics by routinely intruding on Taiwan’s ADIZ.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, gray zone tactics are [quote] “an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one’s security objectives without resort to direct and sizable use of force.” [end quote]
On recent occasions of trespassing on Taiwan’s airspace, Beijing mainly chose to infringe on the southwest corner (near the South China Sea).
In 2021, Chinese military planes entered Taiwan’s ADIZ on 961 instances over 239 days.
