A fire broke out at Fresenius Kabi Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. in Nanchang City, Jiangxi, on Dec. 14. The death toll has risen to five as two people missing were confirmed dead. One injured is undergoing treatment and is in a stable condition.
The warehouse of Fresenius Kabi in the Economic and Technological Development Zone was engulfed in fire at about 3:40 p.m. Three out of the four badly injured people died after being treated at the hospital, one person is still in a severe condition, and two others reported missing has been found deceased. As of 21:22 on the same day, all the flames were extinguished.
The Jiangxi Provincial Emergency Department said on Dec. 15 that as of 2:35 a.m., the rescue operation had been completed.
One mainland netizen said it first caught fire and then exploded. The explosion was probably related to the sterile ethylene oxide gas inside. It is thought that the deceased was killed by the blast.
The company is wholly owned by a foreign legal entity, is a subsidiary of Fresenius Kabi, established in 2002, and currently has nearly 1,000 employees. The company mainly manufactures disposable infusion sets, blood transfusion sets, nutrition kits, infusion pumps, syringes, and other products.
