The Intermediate People’s Court of Changchun City, Jilin Province, announced on June 9 that the former deputy secretary of the party group and general manager of China Huadian Corporation, Yun Gongmin, was sentenced in the first instance of bribery.

Yun Gongmin, 72, was sentenced to death for accepting bribes with a two-year suspension of execution. In addition, he was deprived of political rights for life, and all his personal property was confiscated.

In June 2008, he served as the deputy secretary and general manager of the Huadian Group Party Group and retired in 2013. The indictment stated that from 1992 to August 2016, the defendant Yun Gongming had served in many important positions. Such as vice chairman of the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee, etc.

He assisted relevant units and individuals in business operations, project contracting, and cadre selection and appointment. In addition, he illegally accepted property from relevant units and individuals directly or via their close relatives, amounting to more than 468 million CYN (about 70 million dollars).

The corruption cases in Inner Mongolia, including Yun Gongming and other “tigers,” are all related to the violation of laws in the coal sector.

In February 2020, Inner Mongolia conducted special inspections in the field of coal resources, focusing on key people and issues for the past 20 years.

According to the Inner Mongolia Discipline Inspection Commission website, as of October last year, Inner Mongolia had 734 criminal cases involving coal, with 1,021 people accused. As a result, China recovered 47.076 billion CNY (7.03 billion dollars) of economic losses.
