According to news.cgtn, on Monday, April 5, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi phoned his Hungarian counterpart to congratulate President Viktor Orban on his re-election. He stressed the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, said Hungary’s independence from the E.U. would be important for Europe and the world.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said Orban appreciated the congratulation from the Chinese leadership. He added that he was glad to first speak with the Chinese foreign minister following the elections.
Tamas Matura, a Budapest-based analyst, said, “Given the tense relationship between China and the E.U., China needs Hungary more than ever before.” He noted that, because of strained relations between China and the E.U., Viktor Orban’s victory in Sundays’ election would allow him to expand ties with Beijing rapidly.
