Recently, an embarrassing video of the CCP’s tanks at the International Army Games 2022 military equipment and tanks competition hosted by Russia spread on the internet, attracting ridicule from netizens.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, 61 teams from 21 countries including Belarus, Venezuela, Vietnam, China, and Mongolia participated in the tank warfare exercise called the Tank Biathlon competition. The Chinese military sent its own ZTZ-96B tank, and the rest of the countries used Russian-made T-72 tanks.

The video posted by NetEase showed that the CCP’s ZTZ-96B tank was quickly overtaken by the Russian T-72B3 tank. According to reports, the ZTZ-96B tank can reach a speed of about 50 km/h (about 30 mph), while the T-72B3 tank reaches 77 km/h (48 mph). Netizens mocked the ZTZ-96B as “China’s fastest tank,” according to Sound of Hope.

The video has also gone viral on social media, with @IndoPac_Info commenting: “The T-72B3 isn’t particularly known for its speed. Battlefield acceleration is a very important characteristic for a tank.”

According to Sound of Hope, Russian-made tanks used by other countries in the competition also frequently encountered problems. The T-72 driven by the Sudanese crew hit a railing while crossing a trench.

The entire lateral padding of the track was ripped off when the Iranians crashed into the water pipe next to the track, and the Zimbabwean team got lost and drove onto a field in the middle of the track instead of going in the right lane.

Two anti-tank missiles on the Russian armored vehicle Bumerang also missed the target.

In addition, on August 17, the CCP also announced that it would join Russia’s “Oriental – 2022” military exercise.

Sound of Hope said that Su Ziyun, director of the Institute of Strategic Resources of the National Defense Academy of Taiwan, commented on the relationship between Beijing and Moscow. Su thought that Beijing’s approach may backfire. First it it is an authoritarian state with Russia and uses force to acquire political gain. and the second is that it uses the threat theory. Su went on to say that these strategies are not beneficial to China.
