China’s Ministry of Internal Affairs recently published the “Civil Development Statistical Bulletin in 2021”. Data showed that the number of new marriages in China has fallen to an all-time low. Experts point out that this show that China’s population crisis is worsening like never before.
According to the report, only about 7,643 million couples registered to get married in 2021, down 6.1% over the same period last year. The marriage rate is 5.4 per 1,000 people. Over the past six years, the number of first marriages has decreased by 40%.
Bloomberg News columnist Niall Ferguson said China faces the most severe population reduction pressure in the world, which can be considered a serious disaster.
A survey by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, he said, showed that if current trends continue, China’s population will decline by at least 20% by the end of the century. The most likely scenario is a decrease of 46% to 771 million people. If the situation is more serious, China’s population could plummet by as much as two-thirds.
He said that the CCP’s long-standing one-child policy was ruthless, and although the policy was abolished, other situations have emerged, such as Chinese women not wanting to get married. For example, a 2021 survey conducted by the CCP Youth Union found almost 44% of Chinese women between the ages of 18 and 26 do not intend to get married. Also, the divorce rate in China has skyrocketed in the past 20 years.
Another problem is China’s unbalanced sex ratio due to the one-child policy and the preference for boys. The choice of abortion will get worse in the next decade.
