As the South China Morning Post reported on April 17, the Chinese third aircraft carrier Type 003, may launch behind schedule due to the lockdown in Shanghai.

The launch was expected near the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Navy, on April 23.

However, one of the sources, who requested anonymity, said, “But the plan faces delay as the rampant pandemic in Shanghai has delayed the transport of some key components.”

Type 003 has been under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard on Shanghai’s Changxing Island since 2017, with a launch date set for early this year.

Recent satellite images of Google Earth showed that Type 003 has a total length of 320 meters.

Due to the current epidemic situation in Shanghai, nearly all state-owned firms are required to provide human resources to help in epidemic control, and the Shanghai shipyard is now understaffed.

China plans to develop at least four aircraft carrier strike groups by 2030 to become the world’s second-biggest modern Navy after the U.S.
